Project – Rural Education Website for Academic Collaboration, University of Johannesburg

Creating a Knowledge-Sharing Platform for Rural Education Initiatives in Africa

Project Objective

Develop a scalable, web-based platform for the University of Johannesburg to support academic collaboration around rural education. The project aimed to connect educators, researchers, and professionals through a centralized repository of research, case studies, and resources, fostering knowledge exchange across South Africa and beyond.

Project Description

In 2017, I partnered with the University of Johannesburg to design and manage a web platform dedicated to promoting academic collaboration in rural education. The platform served as a comprehensive repository of resources, enabling educators to access and share research articles, regional case studies, and educator profiles with ease. Built with user-centric design principles, the site provided a seamless experience for academic users to navigate, upload, and access content based on geographical location, education focus, or academic discipline.

Key Features and Design Elements

The website’s information architecture was meticulously designed to accommodate the complexity of academic data while remaining accessible to users with varying levels of technical expertise. Using WordPress, I created dynamic content management areas that enabled categorization by region, discipline, and subject focus, facilitating quick and efficient access to relevant materials.

Academic Collaboration Tools:

I incorporated user-friendly content submission forms that allowed lecturers to contribute resources, minimizing dependency on technical staff for updates. This feature enabled a self-sustaining model for the platform, where academic professionals could actively manage and share content.

User Experience Design and Accessibility:

The platform was crafted with an intuitive, responsive interface, ensuring accessibility across devices. I employed advanced grid layouts and widget-based sections to display content clearly and dynamically, with automatic updates for newly uploaded materials. This streamlined navigation and provided a coherent, visually appealing experience for users accessing resources on various devices.

Training and Content Management

A significant aspect of the project involved training academic staff in managing web content and applying editorial practices to maintain consistency and quality across the platform. Through hands-on sessions, I demonstrated advanced CSS styling and grid layout techniques, empowering the academic team to perform updates independently. The training also covered essential content management practices, enabling the team to maintain the site’s relevance and accuracy over time.
