Project – Pan Africa ILGA Online Conference Infrastructure for LGBTQIA+ Activism
Supporting a Virtual Platform for Continental LGBTQIA+ Advocacy
Project Objective
To create a secure, user-friendly, and dynamic online infrastructure that supports the Pan Africa ILGA (PAfricaILGA) conference, fostering LGBTQIA+ activism across Africa. The project aimed to facilitate the seamless delivery of multi-regional conference content, integrate interactive speaker programs, and maintain high-level security measures due to the sensitive nature of the event and its participants.
Project Description
In my role as a Freelance Web Developer and UX Designer, I developed, implemented, and managed the digital platform that hosted the PAfricaILGA Online Conference. This project, pivotal to LGBTQIA+ activism across Africa, required integrating complex conference functionalities with an accessible and engaging user experience.
The platform supported a diverse array of speakers and content authors, and I developed a flexible system capable of managing high traffic while allowing easy access to speaker sessions, program details, and additional event materials. To achieve this, I collaborated with the conference organizers to implement a combination of custom plugins and robust third-party systems that ensured seamless content management and high-quality program display. Key features included:
1.Speaker and Program Integration: I configured and maintained a content management system capable of organizing extensive conference programming. This system supported real-time updates, dynamic session details, and categorized content for easier navigation by users.
2.Design Elements and User Experience: Visual elements, such as a countdown timer, homepage animations, and responsive layouts, were implemented to enhance user engagement and align with PAfricaILGA’s branding. These components were carefully crafted to ensure the website was visually appealing while maintaining intuitive navigation for all attendees.
3.Security and Data Integrity: Given the sensitive nature of LGBTQIA+ activism, security was a top priority. Throughout the project lifecycle, I managed security protocols, including firewall installation, backup systems, and regular data restoration processes. Additionally, I conducted security audits and addressed any potential threats, ensuring the protection of attendee information and safeguarding the platform against compromises.
4.Training and User Support: To ensure the smooth operation of the platform during the conference, I provided training sessions for team members, covering content management, platform navigation, and troubleshooting processes. This empowered the team to manage program updates and interact with attendees in real time.
5.Regional Project Support and Expansion: Beyond the main conference, I supported the development of a regional website for a collaboration project in Kenya. This project provided a localized digital hub for LGBTQIA+ advocacy, aligning with the broader PAfricaILGA mission and expanding digital access for regional activists.
